Interesting Clues and Potential Leads

Mary Matthews granddaughter, Gladys Edwards, recalls her Gramma mentioning that Jack Matthews (Mary's brother) may have gone to the mines when he came to the United States. Other theories have him going to Australia.

Bonnie Davidson has located two possiblities based upon the mining theory.

I found the website for Guernsey County, Ohio. It has an index for mining deaths for Ohio mines. Lists two people of interest:

Michael Sullivan, died 30 Aug 1904, fell under mine car, location was the King Mine.

John Matthews, died 7 Jul 1906, mine cars, location was the Detroit Mine."

"It was not until gold in Canada's north was discovered that more and more people became interested in the mystical plains and rocky shores of the Northwest Territories. Jack Matthews staked the first claims here in May 1945, with Mike Mitto and Frank Salerno staking their claims in June."
Do you know more about Julia Matthews parents, James and Mary Matthews?   Stephen Butterley born in 1849, County Louth. The son of Stephen and Katherine (Murphy) Butterley. His parents died in Ireland. He married Julia Matthews in Springfield, Illinois in November of 1872. Her parents were James and Mary Matthews. They both died in Ireland (county unknown) in 1875. Also in Springfield, Illinois at that time were his brother Patrick(?) and his sister Bridgett who spelled her name without the "E" as Butterly. She married into the Quinn family in Springfield,Illinois. I know the Irish part of the Butterley's were scattered throughout Louth and adjoining counties. Bob Butterley is another possible connection.
I found Stephen and Julia in the 1880 census, 1900 census Sangamon County, Springfield, IL. She was born in 1850 Ireland. Stephen was a coal miner in Illinois. They immigrated in 1871. Stephen & Julia were married 28 yrs. They had 6 children, 4 still living with them.
In the 1910 Census, Julia was not listed in the household. May have died. Shows Stephen married and not widowed.

In 1920, Stephen does not show up in the census.
